Makhachkala authorities report start of catching stray dogs for shelter

Makhachkala has started catching stray dogs and putting them into a special shelter, the Mayoralty has announced.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on February 19, in Makhachkala, the body of a nine-year-old girl was found; according to preliminary version, she died from a dogs’ attack. On March 1, Makhachkala opened the first ever shelter for stray dogs.

The report "Desire to Kill", published by the “Novaya Gazeta” on February 27, stated that after the dogs’ attack on the schoolgirl, Makhachkala turned into a "slaughterhouse."

Let us remind you that on February 23, residents of Semender (a Makhachkala neighbourhood) held a protest action against the construction of an animal shelter there.

Volunteers from the “Zoolife” Animal Protection Centre assert that killings dogs continue in Makhachkala.

On February 21, the “Change.org” website posted a petition demanding to stop shooting stray dogs in Dagestan. By March 15, the petition collected 70,361 signatures.

On February 28, the head of Dagestan Ramazan Abdulatipov addressed residents of the republic and asked them "not to kill defenceless animals" and "not to escalate the situation".
