More than 40,000 people attend march in Baku

This morning, in Khojaly, a many-thousand march to mark the 25th anniversary of the tragedy has been started from Azadliq   Square. From there, participants of the action went to the Memorial to victims of the Khojaly tragedy.

Today, Azerbaijan marks the 25th anniversary of the Khojaly tragedy. At night of February 25-26, 1992, during the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Armenian armed forces assaulted the town of Khojaly mainly populated by Azerbaijanis. For more than four months, the town of Khojaly stayed completely cordoned off until the Armenian forces took control over it. During this time, according to the Azerbaijani authorities, 613 civilians were killed, including 63 children, 106 women, and 70 old people. 1275 civilians were taken hostage. Until present, the fate of 150 of them is unknown.

The funeral ceremony, held in Baku in connection with the 25th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, was attended by more than 40,000 people, the agency "APA" reports.

According to the agency, "the march was headed by President Ilham Aliev and First Vice-President Mekhriban Alieva."

Participants of the rally marched from Azadliq   Square to the Memorial to victims of the Khojaly tragedy and laid flowers there, the "Trend" reports.
