Family of murdered journalist Rasim Aliev files complaint to ECtHR

Not all those involved in the death of the Azerbaijani journalist Rasim Aliev were held accountable, because of biased inquiry into the case, the parents of the casualty believe; a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has been sent on their behalf.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Rasim Aliev was beaten up on August 8, 2015, and died on the following day in hospital. Six persons became figurants in the case of his death, including the footballer Javid Guseinov. On April 1, 2016, a Baku court sentenced five defendants to prison terms from 9 to 13 years. On October 12, Guseinov was released.

The advocate Fariz Namazly has explained that the above complaint stems from the fact that after the beating, at the hospital, according to his parents, Aliev was not rendered the medical care in full.

"Rasim was not properly diagnosed timely, and he was not operated on... However, the prosecutor's office and the court failed to bring doctors to responsibility of doctors," said Mr Namazly.

According to his version, investigators found that "there were no crime attributes "in doctors’ actions.”

"The prosecutor’s office has found that Guseinov’s participation in the organization of beating the journalist was not established," Fariz Namazly has added.

"The young man suffered for the freedom of expression – for posting his critical views on the Facebook," said the advocate.

Rasim Aliev linked the attack on him with his criticism of the footballer from the "Gabala" Club.
