POC members complain about non-admission to Makhachkala SIZO

Today, Bagrat Musaev Magomed Gadjiev, members of the Public Oversight Commission (POC) of Dagestan could not hold inspection of SIZO (pre-trial prison) No. 1 of Makhachkala. The local department of the Russian Penitentiary Service (know as FSIN) has explained the non-admission by "regime activities."

According to Musaev and Gadjiev, the POC has received a complaint about use of torture to a citizen, kept in the SIZO on suspicion of committing a crime.

To check the complaint, Musaev and Gadjiev went there; however, they were not admitted into the SIZO and could not check the complaint, the Dagestan edition "Novoye Delo" has reported today, citing Messrs Musaev and Gadjiev.

According to the edition, Amirkhan Gasanov, the head of the press service of the FSIN department, has explained that "the POC members were not let into SIZO-1 because of the regime action conducted there." He assured that "there will be no obstacles for POC inspections, and on January 7 the POC members will be able to get into SIZO-1 and carry out the necessary check," the "Novoye Delo" has written today.
