2300 refugees from Azerbaijan remain stateless in Armenia

2.6% of refugees from Azerbaijan, remaining in Armenia, are still without Armenian citizenship after the termination of the programme in support of forced migrants, said Anahit Airapetyan, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Armenia. The refugees from Syria have governmental guarantees of free medical care; and most needy of them are provided with the essentials by charitable organizations, in particular, by the "Mission Armenia".

In 1988-1992, about 360,000 thousand Armenians moved to Armenia from Azerbaijan; of them about 2300 have not received Armenian citizenship, Ms Airapetyan told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

She noted that many refugees have emigrated, in particular, to Russia and the United States. There are now about 88,000 of them in the republic; of them 85,000 of them received Armenian citizenship.

After the start of war in Syria, about 25,000 Armenians moved to Armenia moved, said Firdus Zakaryan, the head of the office of the Ministry of Diaspora of Armenia and the head of the Commission for Syrian Refugees.
