Participants of opposition rally claim threat of establishment of monarchical orders in Azerbaijan (+video)

The amendments to the Constitution of Azerbaijan will alienate the country from the republican system of government and result in the accession of the monarchical orders. This opinion was voiced by participants of the opposition rally in Baku. The organizers of the protest action have decided to continue the protests with the demand to cancel the referendum on the constitutional amendments.

The draft amendments provide for the prolongation of the presidential term from 5 up to 7 years, the introduction of the provision on dissolution of the Parliament, and the establishment in Azerbaijan of the positions of Vice Presidents.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in Azerbaijan, the referendum on the constitutional amendments is scheduled for September 26. On the eve of the referendum, the country launched a wave of persecution of the opposition. Despite that fact, the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) has managed to get a sanction from the authorities for holding a protest action against the constitutional amendments. On September 11, in Baku, the opposition rally began under the enhanced security measures.

The protest action was finished with the adoption of the resolution, according to which "the referendum of September 26 should be cancelled." With a view to the transition to democracy, the resolution proposes to carry out political reforms, including security of real independence of the judiciary and the legislative systems. Besides, in their resolution, the protestors also demand to release political prisoners, start radical reforms to bring the country out of the economic crisis, and increase salaries and pensions to the level of a decent life, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
