Georgian politicians view Kerry's visit as sign of support

Today, John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, concluded his two-day visit to Georgia, stating that the United States continue supporting the Georgia's course towards joining the NATO. The Georgian authorities treat Mr Kerry's visit as a sign of the imminent Georgia's entry into the Alliance.

At John Kerry's meeting with the Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the parties signed the "Memorandum on the deepening of partnerships in the field of defence and security between Georgia and the United States".

Giorgi Kvirikashvili has appreciated the visit of the US Secretary of State to Georgia as a confirmation of the strategic partnership and cooperation of both countries; and the fact that the visit took place on the eve of the Warsaw summit of the NATO, indicates the US' support for Georgia's integration into the North-Atlantic Alliance.

In their turn, oppositionists said that the visit of the US Secretary of State was a sign that the country should hold free elections. They also noted that they talked to John Kerry about the freedom of speech in Georgia.

"This is support for democracy and a message to Bidzina Ivanishvili. Our task is to strengthen cooperation with the USA and NATO," Giorgi Bokeriya, members of the "United National Movement" (UNM), told reporters after the meeting with John Kerry.
