Mamed Ibragim sentenced to three years in prison

Today, the Narimanov District Court of Baku has found Mamed Ibragim, Adviser of the Chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), guilty of hooliganism and sentenced him to three years in prison. His defence treats the verdict as unfair.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Mamed Ibragim, Adviser to the Chairman of the PFPA, was detained on September 30, 2015. The reason for his detention was the complaint of a certain Mikail Guliev, who claimed that Ibragim had beaten him up. The oppositionist was charged with hooliganism and rendering resistance to the official in charge of ensuring public order.

Today, the above Baku court has found Ibragim guilty under Article 221.2.2 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan (hooliganism associated with resistance to an authority), and sentenced him to three years in prison, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

Yalcin Imanov, an Ibragim's advocate, believes that the sentence is unfair.

"It's an absolutely illegal, unfair and politically motivated verdict. It has frankly distorted the testimonies of the parties to the trial. If there was a crime in this case, it was committed against Mamed Ibragim. He was the victim. It was Mikail Guliev who attacked him; and it was confirmed by the prosecution witnesses in court," said Imanov.

According to his story, the defence will appeal against the verdict.
