Cassation Court of Armenia cancels sentence to Argishty Kiviryan
The Cassation Court of Armenia (CCA) has found Argishti Kiviryan, a coordinator of the online newspaper "Armenia Today", earlier sentenced for use of violence against a policeman, not guilty and granted the appeal filed by his advocates.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Argishti Kiviryan was accused of the use of force against a policeman. According to Argishti Kiviryan, he was beaten in a police car and then hospitalized. However, the police instituted a criminal case against him under Article "Use of violence against a public officer." On May 12, a public prosecutor asked the court to sentence Argishti Kiviryan to one year of imprisonment and amnesty him immediately. The court found Argishti Kiviryan guilty and fined him 400,000 drams (840 US dollars).
According to court officials, the CCA has pronounced the decision to cancel the verdict of the first instance court of general jurisdiction of the Arabkir-Kanaker-Zeytun Administrative Districts of June 8, 2015, according to which Argishti Kiviryan was fined.
Despite the acquittal decision of the Cassation Court of Armenia, Argishti Kiviryan has expressed his distrust of the judicial system of Armenia. He has noted that "if the country has justice, he would not have visited for two years a lot of police stations, institutions of the investigating authorities, and the courts."
Argishti Kiviryan has added that every citizen must use all the methods of struggle in defence of own rights.
