"Caucasian Knot" announces contest for journalists in commemoration of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev

The "Caucasian Knot" announces the establishment of the annual contest for journalists, who write about Caucasus. The prizes will be awarded in memory of Dagestani journalist Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev.

Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev, a 54-year-old "Caucasian Knot" correspondent from the village of Karat of the Akhvakh District of Dagestan wrote on the topics of human rights violations in Dagestan, of crimes committed by officials, persecution of religious communities and some individual believers. On July 9, 2013, Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev was killed in the outskirts of Makhachkala. He became the 17th journalist killed in Dagestan during the past 20 years. Prior to his murder, Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev received threats. His name was mentioned in the so called "execution list" - leaflets disseminated in September 2009 in Makhachkala. In the leaflets, anonymous authors promised to take revenge for policemen and civilians. On January 11, 2013, criminals made an attempt to kill the journalist.

Within the contest, the prizes will be awarded for the creation of the most talented and actual journalistic materials that are devoted to Caucasus and that raise important issues of social and cultural life of Caucasus, and that are particularly focused on human rights issues.

The contest accepts texts written both by Russian and foreign journalists, and materials published both in the central and regional media can participate in the contest.
