Armenian activist Vaagan Chakhalyan released
Armenian activist Vaagan Chakhalyan who was sentenced to 10 years of custody in Georgia was released today.
Chakhalyan was released according to the law “On Amnesty” adopted in Georgia, Chakhalyan’s attorney Stephen Voskanyan told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.
Chakhalyan was sentenced to ten years of custody by the court in Georgia in April of 2009. Cumulative sentence on five clauses of the Criminal Code was brought against him. In particular, he was incriminated in holding mass actions and resistance to the police. The Appellate Court of Georgia brought a standing judgment on the verdict.
On October, 5, 2011, Chakhalyan went on an open-ended hunger strike in prison. However, upon a request of celebrant of Armenian eparchy in Georgia Vazgen Mirzahanyan on October, 11, he stopped his action.
