In Armenia, prisoner sentenced to life imprisonment, dies in prison hospital

At night on January 1, in Armenia, at the penitentiary institution "Hospital for prisoners", Manuk Semirdjyan, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, died. This was reported by a representative of the civil initiative group dealing with the problems of prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment.

Manuk Semirdjyan had already served 22 years of his sentence, and the exact cause of his death was not reported.

In 1991, Manuk Semirdjyan was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of killing two or more persons, and he became the first Armenian prisoner sentenced to life imprisonment, the "Panorama.am" reports.

In 2001, Manuk Semirdjyan filed to the court a motion for conditional early relief; however, the court dismissed the motion of the prisoner, the "First Armenian Informational" reports.
