Residents of a settlement damaged by hail in Georgia demand compensation of the damage

On May, 20, residents of the settlement of Bakurtsikhe, Gurdjaani district of Georgia, came out with an action of protest demanding from the Government compensation of the damage inflicted on the agricultural lands by natural calamity.

Earlier, the “Caucasian Knot” reported that there was a heavy rain with hail at night of May, 15, in Eastern Georgia. The disaster inflicted the greatest damage on four settlements of Gurdjaani district completely destroying agricultural lands there. Besides, loss of livestock, destruction of bridges and roads and flooding of cellars and ground floors of dwelling houses were registered in these settlements.

On May, 20, residents of Bakurtsikhe, one of these settlements, came out with an action of protest demanding compensation of the damage. In connection with the protest action the police was mobilized.

Head of Administration of the municipality Johni Osiashvili declared that the disaster happened only four days earlier and within such a short period it was impossible to calculate the damage and distribute compensations, “Georgia Online” referring to “Rustavi-2” TV company reports.

“During this period local and central authorities calculated the sum of damage. All the data has already been referred to the Government. Rehabilitation of infrastructure is accomplished. The rest is the Government’s competence”, Osiashvili said.

Immediately after the emergency, on May, 15, Minister of Agriculture of Georgia David Galegashvili visited the settlements damaged by hail most of all. He promised the farmers state help, “Mir 24” TV company reports.
