Armenia: "Freedom" Party to nominate former Prime Minister Grant Bagratyan for presidency

The today's congress of the "Freedom" Party, a member of the Armenian National Congress (ANC), has decided to nominate Grant Bagratyan, a former Prime Minister of Armenia and a current MP and Chairman of the Party, as a candidate at the upcoming presidential election.

"I believe that participation in the election is mandatory: liberal forces must unite. I stand for acceleration of the processes underway in the political field. One of the main objectives of my nomination is an attempt to find ideological supporters of the liberal way of development," said Grant Bagratyan in his speech to the congress.

Alexander Iskandaryan, Director of the Caucasus Institute, said that the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, and, therefore, the incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan have no serious competition.

He added that the ruling party faces a very important task to ensure the election that will be recognized and respected by international organizations.
