Inquiry into the case of editor-in-chief of "Tolyshi Sado" completed in Azerbaijan

A criminal investigation against Hilal Mamedov, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Tolyshi Sado" (Voice of Talyshes) is over in Azerbaijan. In the next few days the case files will be transferred to the Baku Court of Grave Crimes.

Mamedov was detained in Baku on June 21; and June 22 he was arrested on charges of illegal drug possession. On July 4, the journalist was charged under articles of treason and inciting interethnic hatred.

According to the lawyer Bagirov, the indictment against Mamedov "was written more in the genre of a political essay."

"For example, under the article of treason investigators have attracted a couple of witnesses who heard that Hilal Mamedov had somewhere said some anti-state stuff," said the lawyer.

"Generally, the indictment of Hilal Mamedov can be regarded as a literary or political document, not as a legal act," said the lawyer.
