Kuashev: de facto ban on hijabs in schools of Stavropol Territory is unconstitutional
Muslim lawyers from Russian regions are going to appeal to the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation with a request to check the resolution of the government of the Stavropol Territory about the requirements for school clothes and appearance of pupils at educational institutions for the compliance of the resolution to the Russian Constitution.
"The Russian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion to every citizen. We believe that the above resolution is contrary to the Constitution," Timur Kuashev, a lawyer from Moscow, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
In his opinion, the adoption of the resolution raises many questions. "We'll address the Russia's Constitutional Court asking to recognize it inconsistent with the Constitution," said Kuashev, recalling that in 2003 a group of Russian women-Muslims managed to defend – through the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation – their right to be photographed for their passports in hijabs.
