156 persons fell victim to the armed conflict in the KBR in 2012

In 2012, the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) had at least 156 victims of the armed conflict; of whom 107 persons were killed and 49 more were wounded. The death toll includes 80 persons, treated as militants, 19 employees of power bodies and eight civilians. These are the results of the calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on the data received from its own correspondents and on information from other open sources.

Besides, in 2012, seven explosions triggered in the territory of the KBR were reported, while in 2011 the figure was 21, including one self-explosion, committed by an alleged member of the armed underground at a detention attempt by power agents.

Losses of power agents and the underground

In 2012, in the KBR, at least 80 persons were killed from among those, involved, under reports of law-enforcement bodies, in the armed underground; two more were wounded at detention.

Almost the same losses among IAF members were registered in 2011, under the calculations of the "Caucasian Knot", namely, 80 casualties, while there was no data about any wounded persons.

The "Caucasian Knot" is here emphasizing that the statistics on members of the armed underground accounts for those, who have been announced as such by employees of law-enforcement bodies.

As to employees of power bodies, in 2012, Kabardino-Balkaria lost, as a result of shelling attacks, explosions and armed clashes at least 19 persons, and 30 more power agents were wounded.

In 2011, the republic lost 31 employees of law-enforcement bodies, and 32 more were wounded.

Victims among civilians

The confrontation of power agents and militants is touching on the peaceful population in the most tragic way. In 2012, the overall count of victims among civilians in Kabardino-Balkaria was at least 25: eight were killed and 17 more were wounded.

In 2011, the figure was 30 victims in total, that is, 18 casualties and 12 wounded persons as a result of terror acts, explosions, shelling and attempts committed against and on civilians.

The above statistics is unable to reflect, with a 100-percent precision, the number of victims under each of the categories specified in the report. Not all the data gets into news reports. It is not always possible to verify the truthfulness of the statements made by law-enforcement bodies. There are difficulties in identifying human remains - the lack of adequate laboratories is still an acute problem, which affects the timing and quality of examinations.

Downward trend in the number of victims persists

The figures of losses of the armed conflict in the territory KBR evidence a gradual reduction of the count of casualties and wounded persons. In 2012, there were 156 victims, while in 2011, there were 173 of them, that is, almost by 11 percent more.

This figure was reached through a more than 20-percent decrease of the number of casualties, while the number of wounded persons somewhat went up - 49 in 2012 against 44 in 2011. The number of casualties among the members of the underground remained the same; however, the number of casualties among power agents went down by 63 percent, and among civilians - by 225 percent.

An essential - threefold - decrease was marked in the statistics of explosions, subversive actions and terror acts.
