New terrorist attacks in Moscow possible

"Hunting for Maskhadov and Basaev continues," a Russian Defense Ministry source said. He said capturing the militant leaders would contribute to normalization of the situation in Chechnya and substantially weaken units of Maskhadov's supporters in the republic. Besides, the source emphasized Basaev and Maskhadov were "significant figures" supported by international extremist organizations.

However, foreign nationals are afraid to visit this country until the separatist leaders are caught. Thus, the U.S. embassy in Moscow has warned Americans in the Russian capital they should be particularly vigilant this week. The embassy says the Russian leadership believes terrorist attacks are possible at the beginning of this week and next weekend on the Christ the Savior Temple, the synagogue on Solianka Street, or the mosque on Olimpiiskii Avenue. An American diplomat maintains Moscow police officers reported the information about the possible acts of terrorism to the embassy.
