One person perished and over 300 houses got damaged during the storm in Adzharia

During the hurricane that fell upon Adzharia several days ago one man perished. It was David Geladze, fisherman from the settlement of Sarpi, who was washed down by a wave. Over 300 houses got damaged. The Government of Georgia decided to help the owners of the damaged houses to restore them but many local residents are still doing it at their own expense.

Geladze was the only person who perished during the disaster. 30 divers were searching for him three days and nights, then his body was found in the fishing nets not far from Sarpi.

The hurricane and the storm caused great damages. According to more precise data, 144 houses got damaged in Khelvachauri district, 94 in Kobuleti and 50 in Shuakhevi. Head of the Supreme Council of Adzharia Archil Khabadze said at a briefing late in the evening of March, 27, that 50 houses got damaged in Batumi.

Officials of the Department of Tourism of Adzharia consider that the natural calamity is unlikely to influence the tourist season. “The main tourist objects with the exception of the beaches in Kobuleti and boulevards in Batumi got no damages. We hope the failures we have can be liquidated by the beginning of the holiday time. So, those who come here already in June and July will see no degradations and improvements are highly possible”.

The “Caucasian Knot” correspondent who visited Batumi could receive evidence that there was no significant disruption in the town. All the restaurants, cafés and hotels are functioning, neither did the “singing fountains” get any damage.
