Azerbaijan announces verdict to a group of figurants in the Guba riots case

Today, the Guba District Court has announced the verdict at the trial of a group of eight defendants accused of organizing disorders in the city of Guba. Two defendants were sentenced to real imprisonment, six more were given conditional terms.

On March 1, 10,000 people took part in a rally in Guba demanding resignation of Rauf Gabibov, the head of the executive power of the District, who posted on the Internet a video clip, where he accused Guba residents. The protest action turned into a riot, as a result of which Gabibov's villa was burnt down, and some auxiliary buildings of the District administration were damaged.

There were 8 figurants in this case; they refused to plead guilty of a criminal offense.

The Guba District Court is holding trials of two other groups of persons accused of these events, numbering nine and seven. Today, the Khachmaz District Court has held a preliminary hearing on the case of six defendants accused of Guba riots.
