Criminal liability for compulsion to membership in a party enacted in Azerbaijan

On December, 11, National Assembly of Azerbaijan adopted amendments to the legislation of the country establishing measures of criminal and administrative liability in connection with violations in the activities of political parties.

The Criminal Code of Azerbaijan was supplemented with clause 169.1 stipulating liability for compulsion to joining a party or prolongation of membership in it.

Besides, amendments were adopted to the Code of administrative violations. Sums of fine for the parties interference in the activities of state institutions and officials, activities on behalf of non-existent parties and creating political parties of foreign states were established.

An amendment was made to the law “On accounting” stipulating the parties’ mandatory annual financial reporting to the Ministry of Finance no later than April, 1, of next year. Besides, the parties are now obliged to publish their reports and auditor's conclusion on them in mass media.

    In Novorossiysk, a court found Natalia Fedorenko, an advocate of blogger Vadim Kharchenko*, guilty of violating privacy and banned her from practicing law for two years. Natalia Fedorenko was also sentenced to community service.
