Book "There Was a City..." presented in Makhachkala

A book about Makhachkala "There Was a City..." was published in Dagestan; it is a collection of memoirs of 83 residents of Makhachkala recorded by journalists Svetlana Anokhina and Polina Sanaeva and illustrated by photographs – views of the city and portraits of the authors and memoir heroes.

The project of the book was initiated by the Dagestani newspaper "Present Time", which had published a story of the guide Leoletta Gubina about the old part of the city and an interview of the actress Rimma Markova, who had spent her youth in Makhachkala. Then, a respective page on the Facebook was launched; and then the project was embodied into a gift edition of 400 pages and over 600 photos.

"More than a hundred persons talked to us; they recollected their childhood and youth, gave access to their family archives and albums with wonderful old photos," the authors write in the Foreword.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Svetlana Anokhina that in fact the book has over 83 authors; the readers of the newspaper "Novoye Delo" (New Business) among them, who sent their memoirs to the editorial board.

"This is a book of memoirs; but for me it's a collection of insights, as I couldn't know that my city is so full of wonderful things," Tatiana Kurbanova, a Makhachkala resident, said.
