Teya Tsulukiani: ECtHR pronounces decision on Georgia's claim against Russian Federation

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) issued a decision on the claim of Georgia, filed in connection with the unlawful, according to the complainants, expulsion of Georgians from Russia in the autumn of 2006 and in early 2007 and the violations of their rights. This was reported by Teya Tsulukiani, Minister of Justice of Georgia.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" reported that in 2009, the ECtHR declared admissibility for consideration of the complaint, filed by Georgia, which accused Russia of violating the rights of Georgian citizens by "arbitrary arrests and mass deportations" from the Russian Federation in 2006-2007. On January 31, 2011, the ECtHR started the consideration of the case, examined witnesses and victims on both sides. On June 13, 2012, the Grand Chamber of the ECtHR began considering the claim against Russia.

"The Strasbourg Court has already completed the procedure in the case, and the Court made a decision. I think that it will be published in the near future," the IA "News-Georgia" quotes Teya Tsulukiani as saying.

According to the complainants, Russia had violated a number of articles of the European Convention on Human Rights. In its turn, the Russian side argued that no mass deportation took place and that the decision of the court was made with regard to each immigrant. It was specified that only those Georgian citizens, who had violated the immigration laws of the Russian Federation, were expelled.

According to Teya Tsulukiani, in its turn, the Ministry of Justice of Georgia intends to start negotiations with all those persons, who filed to the ECtHR the complaints against Georgia, the "Georgia Online" reports.

"More than 700 justified cases have been filed to the Strasbourg Court, and we will have to pay for them a lot of money from the budget. Therefore, we plan to begin negotiations with the plaintiffs to reach an agreement in each case, as soon as the ECtHR informs us about it," stated Teya Tsulukiani at the press conference, held on November 27.
