David Sergeenko: Georgian government to pay for rent of apartments for persons in extreme need

The government of Georgia has developed a plan for actions for socially disadvantaged persons, who occupied different institutions. After checking their status, the persons in extreme need will receive funds for rental of housing. This was reported by David Sergeenko, Minister of Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia.

Socially disadvantaged residents of Georgia, including refugees from Abkhazia and South Ossetia, occupy buildings for housing, since, according to their story, they are unable to pay the rental fee. In October, they occupied more than 30 buildings. On October 30, about 20 families of socially disadvantaged people declared hunger strike in front of the building of the Ministry of Health of Georgia, demanding the provision of housing.

On October 31, the plan of actions to help the persons in need was approved at the meeting of the government of Georgia.

"The first task is to carry out the differentiation, that is, to find out, who of those people are really disadvantaged, the poor, and the refugees, and who simply pretend to be the above categories, and, unfortunately, their number is not so little," the "News Georgia" quotes David Sergeenko as saying.

"The object is to pay for rent for housing for the persons in extreme need to provide them with a roof over their head in the nearest days," David Sergeenko has emphasized. He has added that on October 31, social agents worked at 16 occupied facilities to collect information.

The Minister did not mention the exact date of the beginning for the implementation of the social programme to pay for apartments for the persons in need. He just said that the persons in extreme need would be provided with the funds to pay for the rent "starting from the second half of the next week", the "Georgia Online" reports.
