"Peace to Our Home" action devoted to problems of young people in Chechnya

The offices of the Human Rights Center "Memorial" in Nazran and Grozny arranged the Peace to Our Home peacemaking action in December 2003 - January 2004.

The goal of the action was to attract the attention of the Russian people to the problems of young people in Chechnya, as well as to help the Chechen State University restore the library which burnt during bombardments of Grozny in 1995.

Those who wished to take part in the action were offered to send books and/or New Year's greeting cards to students and teachers of the university.

The similar action was arranged abroad under the slogan "Peace to Our Planet".

Due to the international action, the university's library stock was replenished with belletristic and professional literature in 6 languages. The university received 200 New Year's greetings from more than 20 counties of the world.

Thus, the University of Helsinki alone sent 100 kilograms of professional and belletristic literature to Grozny, and Timothy Richardson of the US Embassy personally handed over two boxes of books on US history and culture to the Nazran office of the Human Rights Center "Memorial".

The literature keeps on being received. The decision has been made to extend the action till the end of 2004.

The Human Rights Center "Memorial" has to establish with regret that the Russian action "Peace to Our Home" has not come about in fact.

We thank those few Russians who sent books and greetings to Chechen students.
Friends, your words and gifts are of much value in Chechnya.
