Denials of information about oppression against Armenian population in Abkhazia

The article "Oppression Against Armenian Population in Abkhazia" published on the gruzia.ru website has produced a strong reaction in the republic.

While commenting upon the information that the Armenians were kept down in Abkhazia, Abkhazian Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba said he considered such statements provocative.

In his turn, Speaker of the Abkhazian Parliament Nugzar Ashuba called the report complete disinformation. He mentioned that 10% of the deputy corpse are Armenians.

The Armenian Cultural Charitable Association "Krunk" declares the information spread by the Georgian media that the treatment of the local Armenians has sharply become negative does not reflect the reality. "It was a surprise for us to know that Armenians were forming a rescue committee, the goal of which is the protection against the Abkhazian terror", reads the official statement published by the Association on January 5. Krunk is especially indignant about the report that the Armenian community has been squandering sums and help it has been receiving from abroad for many years. "We do not understand what help in point is. We take all the responsibility to state that the Armenian community has never received financial support since 1994," the statement emphasized. "The report spread by the Georgian media is aimed at kindling interethnic strife in Abkhazia," holds president of the Association Galust Trapizonian.
