The Labourites of Georgia state that the life of convicted footballer Demetradze is in danger
The Labour party of Georgia appealed to the foreign embassies accredited in the territory of the country and Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg calling to pay attention to the prison conditions and state of health of Georgian footballer Giorgi Demetradze.
Nestan Kirtadze, International Secretary of the Labour party, told the journalists about this statement at a special briefing. According to her, Demetradze is on the verge of suicide.
"Giorgi Demetradze who has brought so much joy to Georgian football and his fans and is currently serving his penalty in prison No 6 of Rustavi in inhuman conditions is under an unbearable physical an psychologic pressure and on the verge of suicide, one of Demetradze's attorneys Marika Plokhadze states in addition to publications in Georgian mass media, the Labourites report.
According to Kirtadze, three weeks ago the footballer was transferred to Rustavi prison No 6 the director of which is David Margebadze. "An information appeared that his special card on which a convict can buy food and hygienic facilities in the prison shop was blocked", she declared.
International Secretary of the party added that the footballer was hungry and physically weakened. According to her, he cannot even use his right of walks and training, GHN reports.
"We appeal to the embassies, international human rights centers and Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights to undertake an urgent monitoring on the fact and help us protect not only the convict's rights but the life of footballer Giorgi Demetradze", the representative of the Georgian Labourites declared.
Representatives of the party also appealed to People's Defender of Georgia asking for "personal urgent monitoring on the fact from the day on". "We appeal to Mikhail Saakashvili and Minister Kalmakhelidze for whom the convicts' mortality has become everyday statistics to take urgent measures to improve the situation", a statement of the Labour party runs.
Besides, the party is ready to intercede for Giorgi Demetradze before the Committee for Pardon, "Georgia Online" reports.
