Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze canceled state of emergency in autonomous republic

The head of the Adjarian Autonomous Republic, Aslan Abashidze, signed the order by which he cancelled the state of emergency on the territory of the autonomy. This information was spread by the TV company of Adjaria. The Senate of the Adjarian Parliament approved the order. It came into force in the morning of January 4. The document reads that the cancellation of the state of emergency is caused by the holding of the Georgian snap presidential election in the autonomous republic on January 4. The state of emergency was introduced in Adjaria by the order of Aslan Abashidze on November 23, 2003 as a result of the so called velvet revolution. The Adjarian leader motivated the necessity of such a measure by saying there had been an armed coup in Georgia and it threatened the republic with acts of terrorism and sabotage. It is worth noting that, in spite of the fact that the election was held in Adjaria, the parliamentary Revival Party led by Aslan Abashidze imposed a boycott on the presidential election.
