Human Rights Watch calls to investigate war crimes in South Ossetia
The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called the world community to urge Georgia and Russia to make responsible those who had broken the laws of war and was involved in deaths of peaceful residents and destructions in the course of the military conflict in Southern Caucasus in summer of 2008.
"The main attention on the international community is directed to the one who was the first to open fire, but we shouldn't also forget about the responsibility of the participants of the conflict," said Holly Cartner, Director of the HRW for Europe and Central Asia. "For the people, whose life was ruined, justice is as far as a year ago, and without it, it's hardly possible talking about any real reconciliation."
Human rights activists remind that the EU report, over thousand pages in volume, states that violations of international norms related to human rights and humanitarian law were committed by all the parties: Georgian, Russian and South-Ossetian.
