Today, the first visit of Russian President to South Ossetia, after Russia had recognized its independence, took place. In the course of the visit, which was a surprise not only for residents of the republic, but also for Ossetian officials, Dmitri Medvedev has reiterated that Russia will help South Ossetia in restoring its economy and social sphere.

In Tskhinvali (or Tskhinval, as they name their capital in South Ossetia), Mr Medvedev was welcomed by President Eduard Kokoity and several hundreds of local residents.

The residents of the republic's capital, who rallied near the building of President's administration, welcomed the Russian leader with applause and loud exclamations. Many of them had photo cameras with them and tried to make Medvedev's photos at least from afar. As reported by the "Interfax", there were many children in the square, specially brought there by their parents to see Dmitri Medvedev.

After a talk with Mr Kokoity, Russian leader spoke to townspeople and asked them about their problems and troubles. People thanked him for support and asked to go on helping in restoration of the city and the republic. Dmitri Medvedev assured that it will be done, as reported by Radio Liberty.

The "Osradio" adds that Dmitri Medvedev's visit was kept secret till the last moment.
