Armenian oppositionist goes on termless hunger strike

Karen Karapetyan, head of the youth wing of the Armenian National Congress (ANC), has announced a termless hunger in protest against the arrest of Tigran Arakelyan, an activist of his wing.

"It's senseless to expect anything positive from these authorities. They have proved that they are guided exclusively by their own interests; and to defend them they are ready to any immoral step. But the point here is not in the authorities, but in public resonance. A young man was arrested, and my hunger strike is a signal that we are ready to fight against any manifestation of lawlessness in relation to any of our citizens, irrespective of their partisan affiliation. If a person is pursued for his or her political views, fighting for his or her rights is our duty," said the oppositionist.

The ANC has set up a group in defence of political prisoner Tigran Arakelyan.
