Parliament of Armenia to consider amnesty on June 19
On June 19, the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia will hold its extraordinary session to discuss the proposal of President Serzh Sargsyan to announce amnesty. The corresponding decision was signed by Ovik Abramyan, chairman of the NA.
According to Raffi Ovannisyan, an MP from the oppositional faction "Heritage", should the amnesty be announced before the plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), then, probably, the issue on fulfilment by Armenia of PACE resolutions can be withdrawn from the session agenda, and, thus, sanctions can be escaped.
A similar viewpoint was expressed by Armen Rustamyan, head of the Armenian delegation to the PACE and representative of the ARFD Party. In his opinion, if the amnesty is not announced till the next PACE session in late June, "the position of Armenia will get greatly aggravated."
"Armenia prepares amnesty bill," "In Armenia, Malkhasyan, figurant of former "Case of Seven", demands acquittal," "Armenia: imprisoned oppositionist is against amnesty."
