Russian human rights defenders demand release of Arshaluis Akopyan arrested in Armenia
Russian human rights activists express their indignation with political prosecutions in Armenia and demand that the authorities of the country immediately release Arshaluis Akopyan, a representative of the Helsinki Association.
In Armenia, attacks on independent journalists and members of oppositional organizations and human rights activists have become a sort of everyday practice. This is the topic of the appeal sent by human rights organizations to the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in the Russian Federation, which has arrived to the "Caucasian Knot".
The arrest on June 5 of Arshaluis Akopyan, a member of the Helsinki Association, was perceived by Russian human rights activists as another manifestation of the practice of political prosecutions; moreover, the human rights activist was severely beaten and inhumanly treated while taken to the police station.
The appeal was signed by Oleg Orlov, Chairman of the Board of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", Liudmila Alekseeva, Chair of the Moscow Helsinki Group, Lev Ponomaryov, Executive Director of the All-Russia Movement "For Human Rights", and Natalia Taubina, Director of the Foundation "Public Verdict".
