North Ossetia holds scientific conference on genealogy of Caucasian nations

The international scientific and practical conference "Genealogy of Caucasian Nations. Traditions and Contemporaneity" was held on June 6 in the North-Ossetian Institute of Humanitarian and Social Researches (known as "SOIGSI").

Researchers from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Chechnya, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachaevo-Circassia, Krasnodar Territory and North Ossetia were among the participants.

Islam-Bek Marzoev, head of the sector of genealogic studies of the SOIGSI, has noted that the society experiences great interest to knowing history of people's surnames and their clans.

"Members of different families are trying to publish their history booklets, genealogic albums and family history books indicated particular addresses and surnames of family members," said Mr Marzoev.

Russian regions revive historical and genealogic societies; the Russian Genealogic Federation has joined the International Federation, which is based in France. Researchers of North Ossetia are gathering materials for further edition of the family encyclopaedia to present information about 3500 surnames.
