General Shamanov accused of violating Chechen residents' rights appointed commander of airborne troops

Lieutenant-general Vladimir Shamanov, former commander of a military group in Chechnya who until recently was chief of the main department of army troops combat training, has been appointed commander of Russian airborne troops.

As the "Caucasian Knot" reported earlier, previous appointments of Lieutenant-general Shamanov to high military positions were accompanied by protests of human rights activists.

"In the near future General Shamanov is going to be introduced to the command staff of airborne troops", reports a source at the Ministry of Defense to the "Interfax".
