Targeted programme of waste disposal is designed in North Ossetia

North Ossetia is developing a programme named "Wastes". The document will suggest a complex of measures to solve the problem of solid domestic wastes (SDW), starting from collection, transportation, sorting, and up to complete liquidation of wastes. This was reported on May 6 by Taimuraz Mildzikhov, Minister for Environment and Natural Resources.

As explained by Mr Mildzikhov, similar programmes already work in three Russian regions, and experts of the ecological department visited one of them (the city of Bologoe), where they studied best practices and got into the essence of organizational and technical actions.

The Minister is convinced that for successful solving the problem of household wastes, efforts of power bodies and municipalities are not enough - citizens' active civil position and a corresponding level of culture are also necessary. This judgement is based, as Taimuraz Mildzikhov has stated, on poor outcomes of the experiment conducted in one of the mountain gorges in the Alagir District.

According to the arrangement reached with local authorities, garbage containers were installed in traditional places, where hunters and tourists have their rest. However, after a short while the containers disappeared, and the territory still abounds in garbage dumps.

During conversations with townspeople, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent tried to find out the seriousness of the SDW and possible ways out as viewed by them. The respondents stick to the opinion that the problem is really disturbing, however, its solution depends on a number of factors, some of which are not always possible to cope with.

According to Alexander Dzhioev, people are so anxious of their social and material problems that the problem of garbage dumping is not predominant.

Rita Besolova, another respondent, believes that the solution of SDW problem should start with packing of goods the packing processing should be technologically easy.

Marat Gagiev, a resident of Vladikavkaz, has drawn attention to significant volumes of garbage to be treated: he said that he got interested in the problem and is convinced that a special branch should be set up to address it.
