UN Security Council fails to adopt resolution on Georgia

Again, the Security Council of the United Nations could not adopt the resolution on Georgia. This time, a number of Council members refused to support the draft resolution on situation in Georgia, which was brought to consideration by the Russian delegation.

On August 20, Russia brought in the UN Security Council a new draft resolution on Georgia, containing six principles of settling the situation in South Ossetia.

The UN News Centre reports that Vitaly Churkin, Russia's permanent representative, said that the draft is a "mirror image" of the Moscow arrangements of Presidents of Russia and France, which were supported by the Georgian, Abkhazian and South-Ossetian parties.

A number of Council members refuse to support the Russian draft resolution and demand immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgia.

Vitaly Churkin has accused his opponents of "propaganda" and unwillingness to support in full the peaceful plan of Presidents Dmitri Medvedev and Nicolas Sarkozy. Mr Churkin asserts that the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Georgia has started long ago, but its progress will depend on fulfilment by Tbilisi of their obligations.
