CEC approves six candidates to run for presidency in Azerbaijan

Today, the Azeri Central Election Commission (CEC) has approved six candidates to run for presidency of Azerbaijan. Ilkham Aliev, incumbent president, is among them.

Among the candidates, apart from Aliev, are: Igbal Agazade, leader of the party "Umid", member of the Azeri Parliament; and self-nominated Yashar Akhmedov (unemployed), Alimukhtar Akperov (pensioner), Vugar Sendov (doctor) and Sevindzh Guliyeva (nurse of Sumgait city hospital).

Now, in order to get the above persons registered as candidates to run for presidency, it is necessary to collect at least 40,000 signatures in their support. The campaign of collecting the signatures must embrace at least 60 out of 125 constituencies of the country. At least 50 signatures of voters must be collected in each of the 60 constituencies thereat.

The deadline for submitting the signature lists to the CEC  is September 5 at 18.00. The documents must be checked and the decision on registration or denial of registration of candidates for presidency must be taken within 10 days from receiving the documents by the CEC.

The pre-election campaign starts on September 17 and will be stopped on October 14 at 8:00, one day prior to voting.

  • Court denies compensation to KBR convict for HIV infection

    The Oktiabrsky District Court of Novorossiysk has dismissed Yuri Mikhailov's lawsuit for compensation for the fact that after staying in jails in Novorossiysk and in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), he was infected with HIV and hepatitis. This was reported by his advocate, Svetlana Toreeva.
