Azerbaijan: students hold action against terror

In Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, a mass students' action under the motto "No to terror!" was held. Young people have also demanded to announce mourning in the country in memory of the victims of the bloody massacre in the Azerbaijani State Oil Academy (ASOA).

Today, about a thousand students have marched along Baku streets in protest against the armed attack on the ASOA, which resulted in numerous casualties.

Having marched along central streets of Baku shouting "No to terror!", the young men held a rally near the monument to Dzhafar Dzhabbarly at the railway station. Repeatedly in the course of the march, high-ranking police men tried to persuade students to stop their action, however, young men proved unshakable.

At the rally they held a minute of silence in memory of the victims. Then, they announced their demands: to announce mourning in the country, ensure state care of the casualties' and victims' families and take measures to prevent this sort of incidents in the future. Should the demands be ignored, the students will continue the action.

The rally was addressed by Ilgar Mamedov, leader of the Association "Republic's Alternative" (REAL), who expressed his solidarity with the young activists.

"I find today's protest action against the bloody massacre at the ASOA to be a healthy reaction of Azerbaijani youth to the tragedy. I'm proud that the Azerbaijani youth are able to express their will," said Mamedov in his comments on the youth's march to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his story, the REAL is in complete solidarity with the youth.

Meanwhile, in the ASOA massacre case, a suspect appeared.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by Eldar Sultanov, head of the press service of the State Office of Public Prosecutor, a certain Nadir Shirkhanoglu Aliev was detained as a suspect. Mr Sultanov gave no information about this person or his possible role in the crime, having noted that "operative actions around him continue." By unofficial data, the detainee is a friend of Fardy Asad oglu Gadirov, the April 30 Academy's gunman.
