Volgograd Region: historians complain that archaeological monuments are plundered

The Volgograd Region suffers from injurious plundering of the monuments of historical and cultural heritage. This was sated by the participants of the 20th Local Lore Readings held on February 12-13 in Volgograd. The event brought together 250 presenters from 11 Districts of the Region.

"The federal law on protection of monuments fails to work. Local authorities and militia remain passive," the participants of the Readings have stated.

"It's a real tragedy with protection of monuments here," complained Alexander Glukhov, candidate of history and associate professor at the Division of History of International Relations of the Volzhskiy Humanitarian Institute, Branch of the Volgograd State University in his interview to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Doctor of History Anatoly Skripkin believes that the reason is that the Volgograd Region lacks a proper legislative basis. "I know the situation in other areas: in Rostov Region, Krasnodar Territory and Kalmykia," he has noticed. "The Krasnodar Territory, for instance, passed about 12 local laws aimed towards protection of cultural historical heritage. We drafted our regional law and submitted it to the regional Duma. It was examined and then suspended there."
