Committee to Protect Journalists: threats against investigation in Karachaevo-Circassia are unacceptable
The Committee to Protect the Rights of Journalists has called on the Russian authorities to conduct a fair investigation of the attack on Zhanna Akbasheva in Karachaevo-Circassia.
"The Russian authorities must conduct a fair investigation of the attack on Zhanna Akbasheva", noted Robert Makhoni, deputy-director of the Committee to Protect the Rights of Journalists. "It is absolutely unacceptable that Akbasheva was subjected to an attack and threats for her journalist's investigation", he said. This was reported on Sunday December 28 by radio station "Echo of Moscow".
According to the journalist, the agency for which she works intends to address the republic's authorities with an appeal to protect the freedom of speech in Karachaevo-Circassia. They also intend to apply to appropriate law enforcement agencies with a demand to ensure a proper investigation of the reasons for the attack and to identify the offenders.
