Georgia accuses Abkhazia of shelling EU observers and journalists

The law enforcement bodies of Georgia assert that today observers from the European Union and a group of foreign journalists were shelled from the territory of Abkhazia near the village of Shamgona, Zugdidi District. Abkhazia declares that it has nothing to do with the incident.

"The shelling was made from the opposite bank of the Inguri River controlled the Abkhazian party," the police of the Georgian District Samegrelo-Zemo Svanetia has reported. According to the police, nobody has suffered in today's bombardment from among European observers and foreign journalists, as Radio Liberty reports.

In its turn, the Abkhazian party has stated its non-participation in the attack on foreign observers and journalists. "The situation in the Georgian-Abkhazian border is strained, however, no incidents or fire have been registered within the last 24 hours," said Laurens Kogoniya, head of the Gali District Interior Department.

"Georgia wants to have EU international observers in Abkhazia, and for this purpose they use all the methods - from provocations to disinformation," Mr Kogoniya asserts.

In his opinion the recent frequent messages in Georgian media about bombardments from the Abkhazian side in most cases have nothing to do with reality, as the "Interfax" reports.
