UN delegation: needs of South Ossetian population for humanitarian aid "are not too great"

The delegation of the United Nations believes that the needs of the population of South Ossetia for the humanitarian aid "are not too great". These are the outcomes of the delegation's stay in South Ossetia, who arrived there to estimate the need for the humanitarian aid of the population damaged by the warfare.

The visit of the UN Mission to Georgia and South Ossetia began on September 17, after back in August some of the members of the UN Security Council moved an initiative to send a fact-finding mission to Georgia and South Ossetia.

Stephen Tull, head of the UN Agency for Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, told journalists that the delegation "had concentrated its attention on today's humanitarian needs."

"We tried to discuss, as far serious as possible, with the Republic's authorities their capabilities of providing assistance to their population. We met the top officials of the Republic in order to better understand what was happening in the social sector, and to what extent these needs were satisfied," the State Committee of South Ossetia for Information and Press quotes Mr Tull.

The members of the delegation managed to talk to rather plenty people that, which contributed, according to its head, to better understanding of the situation. Stephen Tull has noted that, notwithstanding the fact "that quite a lot of people in South Ossetia have suffered," the delegation has concluded that "the needs for humanitarian aid are not too great."
