Council of Europe is unaware of exact count of victims in South-Ossetia

Thomas Hammerberg, Commissioner of the Council of Europe for Human Rights, finds it too early to announce the exact figure of casualties and victims of the war in South Ossetia.

"So far, I lack enough data to give any exact figure," Mr Hammerberg told journalists today in Vladikavkaz. "I hope we'll get it soon," the Commissioner has emphasized.

In his turn, Russian Ombudsman Vladimir Lukin told journalists that passions around the Georgian-South-Ossetian conflict are overheated, and the main task of human rights defenders is "not to admit the passions growing into interethnic enmity," the "Interfax" reports.

"Those in charge of concrete war crimes shall be punished," the Ombudsman has added.
