Armenian Ombudsman asks to defend him and his family

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that today Ombudsman of Armenia Armen Arutyunyan has addressed an official letter to Gorik Akopyan, Director of the National Security Service, asking to ensure his personal and his family members' safety.

In his letter Mr Arutyunyan reminds that according to the law, the Ombudsman and the members of his family are under protection of the state.

The letter does not mention any particular threat and gives no reason why the Ombudsman, who was appointed to the position two years ago, has not addressed so far with a request of this sort to the National Security Service.

The Ombudsman's press service has refused to relate the present Arutyunyan's request with the events on March 1 in Yerevan, after which the then President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan severely criticized Arutyunyan's actions, the "Gazeta.Ru" reports.

The "Caucasian Knot" has informed earlier that on March 5 Robert Kocharyan expressed his dissatisfaction with Arutyunyan's work, after the latter had moved some questions to the authorities in relation to disorders in Yerevan. "Appointment of this Ombudsman was one of my worst cadre proposals," Mr Kocharyan stated then.
