Ter-Petrosyan's Election Office: oppositionists detained in Armenia are tortured

Sources from the Election Office of Levon Ter-Petrosyan assert that 12 activists of Armenian opposition have been exposed to tortures at the penitentiary establishments of Yerevan.

Armand Musinyan, press secretary of the Office, told about it in his telephone conversation with the "Caucasian Knot".

According to the information of the Election Office, activists of the opposition Musheg Sagatelyan and Vaagn Aiotsyan were tortured at the corrective establishment named "Vardashen".

Others were tortured at the Nubarashen SIZO: David Arakelyan, Hamlet Abramyan, David Ambartsumyan, Ashot Manukyan, Khachik Gasparyan, Andranik Avakyan, Ruben Voskanyan, Nver Sarkisyan and Aram Baregamyan, and a former policeman Khristofor Elazyan who had refused to give false testimonies against oppositionists.

Human rights activist Vardan Arutyunyan has stated that the situation with human rights and basic democratic freedoms in Armenia is experiencing the state of recourse. He has characterized the processes underway today in the country as "lawlessness". In the opinion of the human rights activist, today the situation with human rights is much worse than at the end of 1980s during "Perestroika" and "Glasnost".
