Resident of Chechnya leaves for Ukraine prior to sentencing for killing his daughter-in-law

Ruslan Umaev, a resident of Bachi-Yurt, accused of murdering his daughter-in-law, has left for the special military operation (SMO) zone in Ukraine. He confessed to the murder and said that he did it because of the girl's immoral behaviour, human rights defenders have informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that those arrested, except those convicted for treason, terrorism and fakes about the Russian Army, have the option of signing contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and end up in the SMO zone; and their criminal prosecution is immediately stopped. This led to an "impunity conveyor belt," human rights defenders keep asserting.

Ruslan Umaev confessed to the murder a few days after Kristina (his daughter-in-law) went missing. He said that she "behaved immorally," so he strangled her and burned her body to the ground, and threw the remains into the river, the "Marem" human rights group has reported.

In 2020, Kristina Kokova, originally from the Moscow Region, married the Chechen Akhmed Umaev. After moving to Chechnya, she gave birth to a daughter, but began complaining about pressure from her mother-in-law and physical violence from her husband. She divorced with her husband and returned to her mother, but Kristina was not allowed to live with her daughter; her husband's relatives took the child from her to Chechnya. The father-in-law controlled his daughter-in-law and threatened to forbid her from communicating with the child, Kokova's mother told the “Daptar” website.

According to the mother, her daughter was killed when she went to Chechnya again in September 2024 to see her daughter.
