Two residents of Dagestan complain about torture

Magomed Magomedov and Amir Makhmudov, residents of the village of Gergebil, filed complaints to the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) about the use of torture by law enforcers, human rights defenders reported.

In July, the police stopped a Magomed Magomedov’s car in search for drugs, the “Team Against Torture”* reported. After a verbal altercation, one of the police inspectors punched Magomed Magomedov in his eye, the “Team Against Torture”* reported in its Telegram channel.

The incident took place in front of the Magomed Magomedov’s fellow villagers, one of whom, Amir Makhmudov, decided to stand up for the man. He took out his mobile phone to film the beating, but the police inspectors threw him to the ground. “They put me face down on the asphalt and hit me in my back several times. The police inspector broke my mobile phone,” Amir Makhmudov complained.

The villagers were taken to a police station. Their requests to call an ambulance went unanswered, and instead, the police inspectors began to beat the detainees.

As a result, Magomed Magomedov was fined, and Amir Makhmudov was sentenced to five days of arrest under the article on failure to obey the police.

*The “Team against Torture” (TaT, formerly the “Committee against Torture” – CaT) was created by the lawyers who had earlier worked for the CaT, which was included into the register of the NCOs performing the functions of foreign agents.
