ECtHR finds rights violation of Circassian activist Ruslan Gvashev

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ordered Russian authorities to pay EUR 3500 to Ruslan Gvashev, a Circassian activist, as compensation for the fine imposed on him for praying at the Tulip Tree in 2017.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in October 2017, the Krasnodar Territorial Court upheld the fine imposed on Gvashev for praying at the Tulip Tree on May 21, 2017, when the Circassian (Adyg) nations of the Caucasus celebrate the Remembrance and Sorrow Day of the Adygs who suffered in the Caucasian War. Gvashev is fighting for his good name and the right to national traditions.

The ECtHR has considered the complaint against the fine of 10,000 roubles imposed on Ruslan Gvashev in April 2018, and ordered Russian authorities to pay him EUR 3500 as compensation; the decision was posted on June 27 on the ECtHR's website.

Let us remind you that during the prayer service at the Tulip Tree, Aidamir Basto distributed traditional funeral cakes to those gathered. He was accused of organizing an unsanctioned rally; and on June 2, 2017, the Lazarevskoye District Court of Sochi fined Basto by 30,000 roubles. In early August of that year, the Krasnodar Territorial Court rejected his appeal complaint.
