Court upholds verdict against Ingush activists

The court of cassation in Pyatigorsk upheld the verdict against the Ingush activists. About 20 people came to the Supreme Court (SC) of Ingushetia to support the defendants.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 18, the defence of seven Ingush activists filed a complaint to the Fifth Cassation Court of General Jurisdiction in Pyatigorsk. The court of appeal committed serious violations, which should be grounds for cancelling the verdict, advocates emphasize.

In December 2021, the court sentenced Akhmed Barakhoev, Musa Malsagov, and Malsag Uzhakhov to 9 years, Ismail Nalgiev, Bagaudin Khautiev, and Barakh Chemurziev – to 8 years, and Zarifa Sautieva – to 7.5 years of imprisonment. All of them are accused of creating an extremist community and participating in it.

Fatima Urusova, an advocate of Akhmed Barakhoev, notes the decision pronounced by the court of cassation is not unexpected. The verdict will be challenged at the Supreme Court (SC) of Russia.

About 20 listeners came to attend a court hearing in Magas, including members of the Ingush Council of Teips (family clans), reports activist Bagaudin Myakiev, a member of the Ingush Council of Teips. “We know that they were convicted unlawfully and that the whole nation support them. The courts ... are transferring the fabricated case further and further,” Bagaudin Myakiev stated.
